I believe that composing alone is half the work of a composer and the other half is
the revelation. The
excitement of coming up with new tone colors (timbre) in composition has
attracted me in such a way
to reach some of my ideas in composition in terms of form, harmony, and rhythm
in music since my
elementary education. The pieces collected in this book are the result of my
composition and research
in jazz music, as well as my personal experience and perspective in modern and
contemporary music.
Some parts of this book represent jazz fusion or Iranian fusion, which was
presented as my thesis at
Berklee University on the subject of Iranian Fusion Music, for which folk melodies
and also Iranian
music were in fact used in the structure of these compositions. “Dareneh Jan” and
“Dokhtar-e Boyr
Ahmadi” are examples of these pieces. A number of other pieces in this collection
are my recent
compositions for the piano, which are presented in the form of an audio album in
the form of a trio, and
in this collection in the form of a piano solo.
In the piano solos section, the pieces are specified with an empty bar. In fact, the
pianist can perform
his improvisation based on the chord progression of the piece and the number of
even bars to complete
the form of the piece, or he can even have open solos in terms of the number of
bars in this section. But
for some pieces, a certain number of bars and chords have been written that must
be improvised exactly.
In composing jazz pieces, it is best to write the melodies and harmonies in one line
so that the musician
can take charge of voicings and melody expansion. However, the pieces in this
book are written in more
detail for the pianist so that with this writing method, musicians who are not
familiar with this style of
music can more easily see the harmonies, rhythms, and forms to perform them.
Finally, I would like to thank my teacher Polo Orti, who opened a new way for me
on playing and
composing, and also the Berklee College of Music University, which introduced me
to a different world
of this art and welcomed the growth of my ideas in composing and playing. I hope
that by presenting
this collection of pieces, we will lead Iranian musicians to this style of music, and
one day we will see
the performance of such pieces on the music scene.
